The Garmin GTX 320A is compatible with several transponder installations through the use of an optional adapter. The included adapter is designed to simplify direct replacement of certain older King transponders in aircraft, saving installation time by using existing wiring and tray.
Technology: The original GTX-320 used a cavity tube, whereas the GTX-320A features a 100% solid-state transmitter.
Reliability & Warm-up: Solid-state design in the 320A means no warm-up time and greater reliability compared to the tube-based 320, which could degrade.
Manufacturing: The 320A was redesigned to share components with the GTX-327, reducing costs and making it Garmin's preferred model, superseding the 320.
Power & Weight (Minor): The 320A draws slightly more power (around 20W vs. 12W) and weighs a bit more (2.3 lbs vs. 1.9 lbs) but offers better performance features like 200W power output and operation up to 50,000 feet.
Installation: Both fit standard height panels, but the 320A offers adapters for replacing older King/Narco units, simplifying upgrades.
