I've started a project called The Acne Effect that is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about the impact that acne and acne scars have on mental health.
I suffered from cystic acne for 15 years and am still battling the physical and emotional scars that my acne has left behind. Acne affected every single aspect of my life: from not doing well in school, to avoiding social settings, to not going after jobs I dreamed of working.
For most of my childhood, up until my first breakout, I wanted to be an actress and model (sure, a common dream of many young girls!) However, I knew my dream would never pan out because of my skin.
My skin journey has taken me down both positive and negative roads in life. I want to use my experiences from acne to positively motivate and transform the way acne is viewed in society - both off screen and on screen. I firmly believe that when we refuse individuals with acne from holding a positive role in the public eye, we perpetuate the stigma surrounding acne: we are telling sufferers that beauty and acne are not synonymous with each other.
THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE!
That said, I've found myself behind the camera more than in front of the camera. I'm an aspiring photographer seeking individuals with acne and/or acne scars who want to have their photos taken and to share their skin journey with me and the public for The Acne Effect.
