I am sharing this simply because most musicians seem to have never heard of it. I am not connected with the program.
If you just want to jam (and particularly if you can improv reasonably well or want to learn) there's a program called Ninjam, which allows you to play music live with people all over the world. Yes, it does actually work and yes it is in sync. You simply need an instrument or VST, some sort of interface to connect your instrument to your computer, and the ability to play. Headphones also recommended. You can create an individual mix of all players involved, and communicate with them via text, or via voice if you have a mic.
I have heard pretty much any style imaginable on there. Check long enough and you will find people who like to play what you like to play.
You can use any of the following to connect:
ReaNinjam (plugin in Reaper)
Original Ninjam Client (still works on new versions of Windows)
Jamtaba (windows and MAC versions)
server list: autosong.ninjam.com/server-list.php
Hook up your gear, open the client, set up your audio settings, and connect to a server. You do not need a password, so just uncheck that field and connect anonymously, any username you like. I recommend keeping transmit turned off at first so you can set levels and figure out what is being played without anyone else hearing.
