What is Dirt Work?
Moving dirt around can be cumbersome unless you have the right machines for the job. Rock is difficult to manage in large quantities as well. Imagine any project that involved tons of materials and you'll likely want an expert to rely on to get it done. Here's what you need to know about dirt work:
What types of dirt work are there?
Dirt work varies from job to job but has a common thread. It involves moving dirt. It can be imported or exported or just graded. There are 4 main categories of dirt work:
1. Water Flow & Soil Erosion: The most common dirt work we see here in Texas is water-flow related.
This can involve cleaning out ditches, reshaping driveways and road edges for better water flow, making flow lines so water can flow unrestricted.
We build areas up so water can traverse a better path, and we fill in trenches caused by water erosion.
Properties should be designed not to flood, but many need help when it comes to the heavy rains we experience here. Property grading is critically important for that water flow. We grade properties that are new construction or going through renovations for a few reasons - so landscaping can take place, and to ensure proper water flow away from structures.
We get a lot of inquiries because water is washing out driveways and roads. Whenever we look at a property here in Texas, water flow is our first consideration.
Galvanized metal culverts play a big role in keeping water flowing. We install a lot of culverts which involves dirt work, installation, and grading of gravel or other paving materials on top.
2. Ponds, Streams & Berms: Ponds, streams and berms involve dirt work and we have plenty of these here in the great state of Texas!
Ponds require a lot of soil to be moved, streams ebb and flow and could require maintenance, and berms require soil to be put in. Some people fill in ponds or pools as well and this is also a dirt work job.
This is common here for aesthetics, irrigation, and to minimize road noise.
3. Property Re-shaping: A lot of the dirt work we see here is to give a new use to a property. This varies greatly, but we build up areas of a lot for future roads or future parking lots, create raised building pads, level out lots or clear lots for construction or new home builds.
4. The Whims and Wants: Homeowners and commercial customers want various flower beds, horse arenas, animal pens, decorative areas, gardens, tree lines, etc. These are also considered dirt work jobs because shaping these areas requires heavy equipment in many cases.
Additionally, when they get overgrown (especially here in Texas), the clean out can be extensive. We can't really describe every use that a property owner would have, but there are many that us and other excavation companies can address.
Adding gravel to various areas can be a good way to strengthen those areas you drive on.
Removing old concrete is a good example of a dirt work job.
