Killer example of a first-year American Standard Strat. The serial starts with E4, which might suggest ’84, but this was right after CBS sold Fender and they were using leftover decals. Plus, this color didn’t even exist in ’84—Gun Metal Blue debuted in ’87.
This guitar’s got a lot of “firsts” going on:
1st year American Standard
1st year for Gun Metal Blue
1st year for the 2-point tremolo
Early production models sometimes had the tremolo pivot pins set straight into the wood. From what I’ve read, Fender switched to threaded inserts sometime between April ’87 and early ’88. Since this one’s an early ’87, it could be the wood-mount version—but I haven’t verified that. Body should be Alder, since Fender didn’t move to Poplar until the ’90s.
Neck is maple with a dark rosewood board, 9.5" radius, and plenty of fret life left. Has the original TBX tone control, too.
As far as I know, I’m the second owner, and I believe everything on the guitar is original. The case is a Road Runner molded plastic hard case that was not the original one it came with.
There’s tons of info online if you want to dig deeper. This page in particular has a great rundown on the history:
